A GROANING CREATION

Hold on! Don’t stop reading yet. I have not yet completed my words for you. The Bible has the final word on everything, even in this troubling and evil day. But we must look at the total picture, so please continue reading. I have good news. God said in Romans 8:22-23, “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.” Groaning is the condition every where and in every life. Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines groan as “To breathe with a deep murmuring sound; to utter a mournful voice, as in pain or sorrow. To sigh; to be oppressed or afflicted, or to complain of oppression. A nation groans under the weight of taxes. A deep, mournful sound, uttered in pain, sorrow or anguish.” Turn on the news, observe society, and you will see groaning everywhere, in all nations and countries.

Try to get a clear look at people and nations today, and honestly see the perfect description of today and what the Lord said was coming to planet earth. A “groaning creation” all groans together, including everything God created in the beginning, including beasts, fish, fowls, and humans. All are united in a condition of sorrow. The expression denotes mutual and universal grief. It is one vast and loud lamentation, in which a dying world unites, and in which it has united “until now,” today. They are united in sorrow and agony. The common groaning means intense agony, misery, and suffering. No wonder creation looks for deliverance and freedom. Who in their right mind, wants to live in a world of increasing sorrow and agony.

God made a way of escape. That way is His Son, Jesus. Read the verses from Romans again. Christ has interceded for us. He made a way for those who would believe and trust Him. The prophesied end of this place of groaning and travail is in 2 Peter 3:10-13, “…the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness…Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.” He will make all things new.

Read and study these verses and see that Paul is saying, it’s terrible, it’s going to get worse, but we are not home yet. Paul gave us these encouraging words, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10). Christians, it will be worth all earth’s suffering and agony. This will be our reward and joy, Revelation 22:3-5, “…there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him, And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign forever and ever.” Revelation 22:13, “…I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” Finally, from Isaiah 65:17, His promise has been fulfilled “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”
