And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. – Luke 7:37-38
We are now in a world where people have an entitlement mentality. People are fighting for their rights and expect to have them because they deserve it. Some would even say that life is unfair. This leads me to a question: what if God really gave us what we truly and rightly deserved? Wouldn’t that be horrible? You see, we are sinners, and we deserve punishment. Every day we commit sins against God both great or small. So if God were to strictly implement the right punishment for each of our sins, where would we be? What would happen to us? That is why we have to be thankful that God is gracious to us, forgiving and saving us from our sins. The woman in the verse knew how sinful she was, but at the same time, she also knows God’s great grace. That is why she offered the most expensive perfume that she had to express her great gratitude. What about us? What is our response to God’s marvelous grace?
Shalom
