Have you ever received good news on a day you least expected it? Wasn’t it the best feeling ever? That is probably what the humble shepherds felt that particular night when an angel of the Lord appeared, and the glory of the Lord shone down upon them while they were in their fields. In ancient Israel, shepherds were viewed as lowly in status and were generally considered “unclean” due to the nature of their work. Being a shepherd was a twenty-four-seven job that meant working on the sabbath day, and it drew the ire of legalistic Jews. But God did not invite the nobles or rulers to visit His Son born in a manger but the lowly shepherds in the fields! Jesus Christ’s mission was not only to save the righteous, religious, rich, or powerful, but He came to save all of us, including the poor, sick, weak, powerless, and sinners like
