Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. John 16:20-22
As I wait for the birth of my third child, these verses seem especially poignant. There is no doubt that there is much pain in this life, but Jesus has given us something to look forward to. He has given us hope. We have a choice though, will we focus more on the sorrow and pain that we are experiencing, or will we choose to focus on the joy that is coming? When you’re having a baby and labor pains start, focusing too much on each contraction only makes them seem worse, then the fear starts to set in. However, when you think about what you’re working toward, and that this pain won’t last forever, somehow the pain is a little more bearable. Let us choose to focus on Jesus through our pain, knowing that He will turn our sorrows into joy in the most wonderful ways possible
