Atonement in the English means, to make amends; to reconcile. It is where God and sinner are brought into relationship, at-one (at-one-ment). The sacrifice that God made through His Son, Jesus Christ, was the ultimate supreme sacrifice, that Jesus became our atonement, that we, through faith, now receive all the blessings and benefits that He gave to us through the covenant that was received through His Son.
God set aside specific seasons He calls “Holy” and we are to honor Him by observing these specific seasons He has appointed… let me show you.
That is the Day of Atonement, He made the ultimate divine exchange. And that divine exchange, that when He said, it is finished,it means it is perfectly perfect, and it is completely complete… The atoning work on the cross literally gave you and I everything that we didn’t deserve, that we cannot earn, but was given and granted and sealed to us by the blood of Jesus Christ. And that is why we honor God.
In Leviticus 23:24, a trumpet or shofar blast announces to this holy season and the beginning of the Fall Feasts of the Lord:
The Feast of Trumpets”(or Rosh Hashanah September 6th),
The Day of Atonement (or Yom Kippur September 16th),
and The Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot September 20th-27th)
God commanded His people to honor these holy days forever, as an everlasting covenant with Him: They are HIS Holy Days! …these are the LORD’s appointed festivals, the official days for holy assembly that are to be celebrated at their proper times each year (Leviticus 23:4).
Be careful to celebrate the Day of Atonement on the tenth day of that same month—nine days after the Festival of Trumpets. You must observe it as an official day for holy assembly, a day to deny yourselves and present special gifts to the LORD (Leviticus 23:27 NLT).
The DAY OF ATONEMENT, or Yom Kippur, is God’s biblical holy day that He established on His sacred calendar as a covenant of repentance and promise for you and to release the fullness of His blessings and presence into your life!
The Day of Atonement also gives you the opportunity to receive SEVEN SPECIFIC PROMISES from God. The blessings that follow are reserved for those who are obedient to His holiest day and commandment.
How do we honor him?
On that day, I believe it’s a day you should fast. It’s not mandatory, like it was in the Old Testament, but I believe that you should fast. That day is a day that you pray. That day is a day that you stand before the Lord, not empty handed, according to Deuteronomy chapter 16:16. But you honor God with an offering, an acceptable offering, every man according to his ability.
So, what happens when we honor God?
There are SEVEN SUPERNATURAL BLESSINGS that are released on God’s people for the next year when the sacrifice is offered and accepted:
DOUBLE PORTION (Joel 2:23)
FINANCIAL ABUNDANCE (Joel 2:24)
RESTORATION (Joel 2:25)
MIRACLES (Joel 2:26)
GOD’S DIVINE PRESENCE (Joel 2:27)
BLESSING’S UPON YOUR FAMILY (Joel 2:28)
DELIVERANCE (Joel 2:32)
The Day of Atonement is a sacred covenant with God that is ageless and to be honored throughout all generations! This shall be an everlasting statute for you to make atonement…(Leviticus 16:34).
…and they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed. Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you (Deuteronomy 16:16-17).
